OUR STORY

I’m Henna, the founder of Aura Fragrances. Fragrant aromas form an essential part of my culture, and I was blessed to be surrounded by them constantly growing up in India. With a background in business and a passion for entrepreneurship, my calling was to craft a range of curated home fragrances that revive the nostalgic aromas I experienced outdoors while growing up.

  I adore the fragrance of roses, jasmine, lilies, tulips and orchids. Women in India traditionally wear flowers like jasmine to adorn their hair during festivities and events, and  large fans scented with rose essence sprays often feature at wedding celebrations to keep the guests cool on hot summer days.

 Traveling through coffee plantations in the South of India, I learnt a lot about different trees and shrubbery and how their fragrances enhanced the ambience. Walking through deciduous forests during and after the summer monsoons always intrigued me, I adore the mesmerising fragrances the various flowers and trees produce after showers!

Everyone loves the earthy, fresh aroma of petrichor. The days following a heavy thunderstorm would be brilliant and dazzling with flowers dancing in all their glory, the bright colors and sweet floral fragrance mingling with the deep and rich petrichor. This inspired the Floret fragrance in our collection, which is very close to my heart as it takes me back to my childhood and these beloved memories. My visit to the beautiful mountain summits in Southern India is a vivid memory of the gorgeous views along the way! I am still in awe of one such vista, when we drove to a mountain top and the whole ride had a heavenly fragrance, the roads surrounded by endless plantation of the tallest eucalyptus trees. I recall gazing at the stately trees and inhaling the purest air! The Meditate fragrance in our collection is reminiscent of this trip, we use pure eucalyptus oil and an assortment of herbal fragrances to create this aroma.

 Living close to the seaside growing up, delicious, fresh coconut water was a staple to hydrate with. Horizon is reminiscent of my childhood, playing on the beach amidst the sand whilst guzzling down tons of refreshing coconut water! With such wonderful experiences of traveling, I developed a strong nostalgic connection to places and the fragrances associated with them.  My kids also love being close to nature and enjoyed wholesome fragrances, and I wanted to raise them around the same experiences. I truly believe that fragrances can be very nostalgic and healing. My attempts to purchase similar fragrances were in vain, it was a struggle to find such a diverse and specific set of scents that were allergen as well as chemical free. My kids deal with asthma and other skin related conditions, so being outdoors and allowing them to have the same experiences as I did growing up became a struggle as well. They absolutely adored the scent of candles and other refreshing fragrances around the house, but their allergies inhibited them from enjoying them.  We tried a lot of alternative brands of fragrances, but nothing really stuck. In the process of my research in herbal oils, my sons suggested we make our own concoction as a fun weekend project. 

Our goal with the activity was to make an all natural soy wax candle, and to our surprise, it had an amazing fragrance and didn’t trigger any of their allergies! Our delight in this discovery and curation of the technique led to the establishment of Aura Candles Studio. As soon as I started to sell my products at the local farmers’ market, I realized that there were like-minded individuals with abundant knowledge and experience in the realm of fragrances.  Meeting people from different cultures exposed me to their various unique experiences of fragrances from the countries they hailed from. For instance, Palo Santo is native to South American cultured with a historical use in spiritual purification. When my customers started reminiscing the intricate details of their travels and nostalgic experiences with me, I researched and experimented with fragrances to recreate the blend that took them back to their memorable moments. This was how I created the fragrance Spiritual. Our very first fragrance, Meditate, was designed keeping my kids’ allergies in mind. The outstanding success of this product, and excellent reviews we received made us realise the importance of creating a range of curated, quality fragrances that could be used especially by parents like me.

   We have since expanded into various other product categories, to give our treasured customers the option of soot-free and non flammable fragrances that can be used in a wide variety of indoor spaces including dorm rooms, offices and vehicles as well. We have, in fact, acquired a niche clientele of teachers and students who greatly enjoy the diffused calming fragrances in their classrooms, enhancing their learning experience. A lot of teachers in particular have frequently re-purchased our fragrances, and often tell us about how the soothing ambiance they create really helps their students focus and concentrate better.
